Biography

The Kilfenora Céilí Band, founded in 1909 in Kilfenora, County Clare, Ireland, is one of the oldest céilí bands in the country. Formed by local fiddler Michael Slattery, the group initially played at fundraising dances to clear parish debts. In 1953, PJ Lynch reorganized the band, leading them to win three consecutive "All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil" titles from 1954 to 1956. The band's popularity grew with extensive touring throughout Ireland and England in the 1960s. After a period of quieter activity in the 1970s and 1980s, John Lynch, son of PJ, took over as bandleader in 1993 and led them to win four consecutive All-Ireland titles from 1993 to 1996. The Kilfenora Céilí Band has released numerous albums, including All-Ireland Champions For Three Consecutive Years (1959) and Century (2009).
