Biography

The Jubalaires, an American gospel group active between 1935 and 1961, were originally known as the Royal Harmony Singers. They gained recognition for their rhythmic rhymed couplets, which were considered one of the earliest forms of music that would evolve into rap. In 1942, they reached number 10 on the R&B charts with "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition", a song adapted from a sermon given in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Other notable singles include "God Almighty's Gonna Cut You Down/Go Down Moses" (1947) and "Little Mr. Big/The Old Pianola" (1950). They also appeared on CBS radio with Arthur Godfrey in 1946 and featured in the musical comedy film Duchess of Idaho in 1950.
