Biography
The Mighty Clouds of Joy, an American traditional gospel music quartet, were formed in 1959 in Los Angeles. The original group members included Joe Ligon, Johnny Martin, Ermant Franklin Jr., Artis Turnbough, Elmeo Franklin, Richard Wallace, Leon Polk, and David Walker. Initially a tradition-based style group, they gained fame in 1961 by incorporating bass, drums, keyboards, and a funky sound that blended gospel with rhythm and blues. The group's unique style also included elements of soul, R&B, and rock without diluting the religious essence of their material. Their early hit "Steal Away to Jesus" was released in 1960. The Mighty Clouds of Joy became one of the most influential gospel groups in the US, known for their stylish attire and slick choreography. They flourished throughout the rest of the 20th century, releasing numerous albums including Changing Times (1979), Pray For Me (1990), and 50 Year Celebration (2011). The group scored several Grammy Awards and nominations, as well as hit albums. Notable songs include "Amazing Grace" (1975) and "Mighty High" (1975). Their pictures are on display in the Apollo Theater. Joe Ligon died on December 11, 2016, at age 80.
