Biography
The Imagined Village is a folk music project founded by Simon Emmerson of Afro Celt Sound System in 2004. The collective reflects modern United Kingdom multiculturalism by syncretizing diverse musical traditions featuring musicians from several cultural backgrounds. The project's name originates from Georgina Boyes' 1993 book The Imagined Village. In 2007, the group released their self-titled debut album on Real World Records, which included modern re-interpretations of traditional folk songs. Benjamin Zephaniah won Best Original Song at the Talkawhile Awards for Folk Music in 2008 for "Tam Lyn Retold". In 2009, the project moved to ECC Records and released Empire & Love in 2010, followed by Bending the Dark in 2012. Notable live performances include appearances on Later with Jools Holland.
