The Hamburg Blues Band, a German blues rock group, was founded in 1982 by singer and rhythm guitarist Gert Lange. The band's early lineup included Alex Conti on lead guitar and featured prominent English musicians as guests and members. In 1989, they released their debut album Live Featuring Dick Heckstall-Smith, which showcased the talents of British saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith. Notable collaborations included performances with Chris Farlowe, Clem Clempson, Mike Harrison, Pete Brown, and Maggie Bell. The band's 2005 album Live on the Edge of a Knife featured a memorial to Heckstall-Smith, who passed away from cancer in 2004.
