Biography

The Girlfriends were an American girl group from Los Angeles formed in 1962. The band consisted of Gloria Jones, Nanette Williams, and Carolyn Willis. The ensemble was founded following the splintering of the studio group The Blossoms. They debuted with the single “My One and Only Jimmy Boy” (1963), which reached number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 77 on the Cashbox charts. The track was written and produced by David Gates and featured production similar to Phil Spector. Jan Berry arranged and paid for the recording session. The group recorded two unreleased songs, “Baby Don't Cry” and “I Don't Believe in You”, for a second single that was shelved following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The group became inactive in 1964. Willis worked as a session vocalist for Lou Rawls and O.C. Smith before joining the group Honey Cone. Willis was a featured vocalist on the Seals and Crofts recording “Get Closer” (1976). Jones and Willis performed as The Shirelles on the nostalgia circuit during the 1990s.
