Biography

The Foggy Mountain Boys were an American bluegrass band formed in 1948, initially featuring Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. The duo met while performing with Bill Monroe's band before forming their own group, which included fiddle player Paul Warren and dobro player Burkett Howard Graves. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" in 1949, a song that later gained widespread popularity through its use in the film Bonnie and Clyde. The band released numerous albums, including Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs (1959) and Foggy Mountain Banjo (1961). They achieved significant chart success with "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" in 1962, reaching Number 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The Foggy Mountain Boys disbanded in 1969 due to artistic differences between Flatt and Scruggs. Both were elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1985.
