Biography
The Duals was an American surf rock duo formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1961 by lead guitarist Henry Bellinger and rhythm guitarist Johnny Lageman, who grew up together in the same neighborhood. They recorded their first single under the guidance of producer Ron Barrett, who had recently founded Star Revue. Their breakthrough came with the single âStick Shiftâ (1961), which reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the duoâs only top 40 hit. The trackâs instrumental hot rod sound influenced a wave of car-themed recordings. In late 1961, they issued their sole studio album, Stick Shift (1961). They subsequently released the singles âCha Cha Guitarsâ (1962), featuring the B-side âTravelin' Guitarsâ, and âThe Big Raceâ (1962), featuring the B-side âOozy Grooveâ, both of which failed to chart. Despite early airplay in California and performances in Philadelphia and New York City, the duo disbanded shortly thereafter. In 1996, the album Stick Shift was reissued on CD by Collectables Records, and the original master tapes were finally credited for royalties in 2004.
