The Delgados were formed in 1994 in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, by guitarist and vocalist Alun Woodward, drummer Paul Savage, bassist Stewart Henderson, and later joined by vocalist and guitarist Emma Pollock. Their early work began with the 1995 single "Monica Webster" on their own Chemikal Underground label, which gained attention from BBC DJ John Peel and was named Melody Maker single of the week. The band released the EP Lazarwalker the same year, before debuting the studio album Domestiques in 1996, which was praised for its energetic sound. In 1998 they followed with Peloton, incorporating orchestral arrangements. The 2000 album The Great Eastern, produced by Dave Fridmann, earned a Mercury Prize nomination and established the groupâs more ambitious, orchestral direction. Hate (2002) continued this trend, while the 2004 release Universal Audio marked a shift toward a cleaner sound under producer Tony Doogan. After bassist Stewart Henderson announced his departure in 2005, the group disbanded that April. The Delgadosâ catalog has since been celebrated for its contribution to Scottish indie rock, with postâdisband releases such as The Complete BBC Peel Sessions (2006) preserving their legacy.
