The Deathray Davies is an indie rock band from Dallas, Texas, formed as a solo side project by John Dufilho. The band's name is a reference to Ray Davies of The Kinks. The group became active in 1999 when Dufilho sent a demo tape to the SXSW performance and recruited friends from other local bands to perform with him. Their debut album, Drink With the Grown-Ups and Listen to the Jazz, was released in 1999. Following this, they released several albums including The Return of the Drunken Ventriloquist (2000), The Day of the Ray (2002), and Midnight at the Black Nail Polish Factory (2003). In 2004, after the release of Midnight at the Black Nail Polish Factory, they were profiled in Esquire and People magazines. Following the release of their album Midnight at the Black Nail Polish Factory, the band was profiled in Esquire and People magazines. The band has toured with notable acts such as Starlight Mints, The Breeders, and The Old 97's. In 2021, their album Time Well Wasted was released.
