Biography

The Chakachas, a Belgian group primarily consisting of studio musicians, was formed in 1958. The band, also known as Les Chakachas and Los Chakachas, featured Gaston Bogaert on percussion and drums, Henri Breyre on guitar, Bill Raymond on bass, Christian Mare on piano, Charlie Lots on trumpet, Victor Ingeveldt on saxophone, and Kari Kenton on vocals. The group initially released numerous singles and EPs on RCA Records, including "Eso es el amor" in 1958, which became their first major hit in Belgium. Throughout the early 1960s, they explored various Latin American music styles such as cha-cha-cha, mambo, rumba, twist, Madison, Watusi, and bossa nova, often singing in Spanish but also in French, English, or German depending on the release. Their songs "Twist-Twist" (1961) and "Madison 62" (1962) charted in Germany, with the latter featured in the film Sing, aber spiel nicht mit mir. The band disbanded mid-decade but reunited in 1970 to record new material. Their instrumental track "Jungle Fever", released on Polydor Records that year, became a global hit and is noted for its enduring influence, being sampled by numerous artists and featured in films like Boogie Nights (1997) and the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
