Biography

The Celibate Rifles was an Australian punk rock band formed in Sydney in 1979. The original lineup consisted of Dave Morris on rhythm guitar, Kent Steedman on lead guitar, Michael Couvret on bass guitar, and Phillip Jacquet on drums. The late lead vocalist Damien Lovelock, who died on August 3, 2019, joined in 1980. The first release of the group was the four-track EP But Jacques, the Fish?, recorded in March 1982. The band signed with Hot Records, which reissued the EP in March 1983 and released the debut studio album, Sideroxylon, in April 1983. The group toured extensively in North America and Europe, releasing albums such as the live album Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (1986) and the studio albums Blind Ear (1989) and Spaceman in a Satin Suit (1994). Lovelock also pursued a solo career, releasing the albums It's a Wig Wig Wig Wig World (1988) and Fishgrass (1991), before his death in 2019. A posthumous single, “I'm Gonna Try”, was released on January 1, 2020.
