Biography

British rock band The Bible, was formed in 1985 in Cambridge by Boo Hewerdine (lead singer), Tony Shepherd (keyboard player/drummer) and Clive Lawson (bassist). Their early line-up included jazz saxophonist Kevin Flanagan and drummer Dave Larcombe. The band released their debut album, Walking the Ghost Back Home, on independent label Backs Records in 1986. The album featured notable tracks such as "Graceland" and "Mahalia", which peaked at number 15 on the UK Independent Chart. The band’s success led to a signing with Chrysalis Records. In 1987, they re-released "Graceland" but did not achieve significant chart improvement. Their second album, Eureka, released in 1988 featured guest appearances by Calum MacColl and Greg Harewood. The Bible's highest-charting single was a re-recording of "Graceland", which reached number 51 in April 1989. However, internal pressures led to their disbandment in early 1990 following a TV talent show loss. Following the split, Hewerdine pursued a solo career while other members engaged in various musical projects. In 1994, The Bible briefly reunited for recordings and a tour, releasing the Dreamlife EP. Despite efforts to complete new material with songwriter Gary Clark, the band ultimately disbanded again before finishing their album.
