Robert William Lane, known as Tex Morton, was a singer-songwriter born on August 30, 1916, in Nelson, New Zealand. In 1934, he recorded several "hillbilly" songs privately. Morton moved to Australia around 1934 and made his professional debut in February 1936 with four recordings for Columbia Graphophone Company. Morton's career spanned decades, including notable periods in Canada and the United States during the 1950s. Morton was also recognized for his contributions to country music, becoming the first inductee into the Australian Roll of Renown in 1976. He released the albums Tex Morton's The Goondiwindi Grey in 1977 and The Black Sheep in 1982. He continued performing and recording until his death from cancer at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney on July 23, 1983.
