Edward Dicks, born 5â¯Mayâ¯1928 in Muswellâ¯Hill, London, was an English composer known for stage and screen music. After a brief teaching career, he wrote the 1960 stage show Letâs Go Mad, staged as Look Whoâs Here!. His breakthrough came in 1962 when George Martin produced his collaborations with lyricist Myles Rudge for Bernard Cribbins, and the novelty songs "Right Said Fred" and "Hole in the Ground" entered the UK Singles Chart top 10. The 1965 hit "A Windmill in Old Amsterdam" sold a million copies and earned an Ivor Novello Award in 1966 for âYearâs Outstanding Novelty Compositionâ. Ted Dicks also composed the theme for the 1966 film Carry On Screaming, the 1970s childrenâs series Catweazle, and scores for Clinic Exclusive (1971) and Virgin Witch (1972). He died 27â¯Januaryâ¯2012, survived by his wife and son.
