Biography

A genius arranger who came to music late in life, David Whitaker is more respected in France than anywhere else. Yet the famous violins in The Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of The Rolling Stones' "The Last Time " are his work, as are the arrangements of Marianne Faithfull and Nico's early songs. This self-confessed dilettante then found happiness with the French yé-yés, then especially with Serge Gainsbourg for "Cosmic Strip" and his deliriums. David Whitaker has also dabbled in film music, mainly in the genre for Vampira (1974) and Harry, un Ami Qui Vous Veut du Bien (2000). On January 11, 2012, Air, Etienne Daho, Eurythmics, Kings of Convenience and Sylvie Vartan mourned the death of the man who knew so well how to magnify their songs.
