Formed in New York in the mid-1970s, Tarika Blue was a fusion and jazz-funk band founded by keyboardist Phil Clendeninn. The groupâs music embraced spiritual and mystical jazz and blended it with their pop, soul, and funk foundation. Along with Phil Clendeninn, the core of the group also included bassist Barry Coleman and drummer Kevin Atkins. The rest of Tarika Blueâs line-up featured saxophone players Marvin Blackman (tenor) and Justo Almario (soprano), and guitarists Ryo Kawasaki and James Mason. The group also worked with several female vocalists including Lisa Fisher, Irene Datcher, Tequila, and Dolores Smith. The group released their self-titled instrumental debut in 1976, which featured the song âDreamflowerâ, later sampled by Erykah Badu on her song âDidnât Cha Knowâ. Their second album, The Blue Path, was released in 1977 and introduced several female vocalists to their recordings. The group split up and never released a third album although their musical legacy continues with several compilations including The Very Best of Tarika Blue (2001).
