Biography
Tanglefoot is a Canadian folk band from Owen Sound, Ontario, established in 1980. The ensemble was founded in Peterborough by the musicians Joe Grant, Bob Wagar, and Tim Rowat and reached professional recognition for a musical style that blends historical storytelling with vocal harmonies. Their recording career began with the studio recording Igg's Pig: Songs and Stories for Young Canadians (1984) followed by the studio recording Saturday Night in Hardwood Lake (1994). The ensemble subsequently released the studio recording The Music in the Wood (1996) followed by the studio recording Full Throated Abandon (1999). Tanglefoot reached professional recognition in 1999 when Full Throated Abandon received the Gold Star Award for Best Album from Crossroads Magazine. Their discography included the studio recording Agnes on the Cowcatcher (2002) followed by the live recording Captured Alive (2003). The group reached wider visibility for the studio recording Dance Like Flames (2006), which reached professional recognition after being named Best Vocal Group at the 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Tanglefoot performed international tours across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom before becoming inactive in 2009. The ensemble resumed activity in 2026 with the addition of the musician Josh Ritchie.
