Biography

Ernest Joseph "Tabby" Thomas (1929–2014), also known as Rockin' Tabby Thomas, was an American swamp blues musician, singer, and songwriter born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He performed on both piano and guitar. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Thomas won a 1959 talent contest on KSAN radio in San Francisco. He recorded for several labels before releasing the single “Hoodo Party” with Excello Records in 1961. In Baton Rouge, Thomas performed with his band, the Mellow, Mellow Men, and founded the Blue Beat record label. In 1978, he opened the blues club Tabby's Blues Box and Heritage Hall. His 1986 single “Bad Luck and Trouble” was nominated for a W.C. Handy Music Award. Following a 2002 automobile accident and a 2004 stroke, Thomas focused on singing and hosted the radio program Tabby’s Blues Box. Thomas died on January 1, 2014.
