German-born singer-songwriter Synje Norland has a transatlantic lifestyle spending her time between her homes in Canada and Germany. She made her recording debut in 2007 with the album 'Skipping Stones' released on the Norland Music label, a label created by her father specifically to promote his daughter's musical career. The album was a collaboration with music producer Benitto Battiston. Some of the tracks from the album were featured in the German miniseries 'Red Roses' and this exposure to a national TV audience helped promote album sales.
In 2008 she collaborated with the Berlin pop musician Sven van Thom and they created the album 'Phantomschmerz' which was released in 2008 and spawned the single 'Sad Girl'. Norland's second solo album 'To the Other Side' was also released in 2011 on her father's label and was nominated for a German Music Authors' Prize in the Young Talent category. Despite some lavishly produced videos and ongoing support from her father's record company Norland has failed to achieve significant commercial success although her moody, ambient style of music has found its way on to a number of TV and film soundtracks. In 2009 the single 'Dreaming of You' was used to promote a famous brand of German chocolate.
