Biography

Sylvia Sass, born Judit Szilvia Sass on July 12, 1951, in Budapest, Hungary, is a soprano known for her association with the Italian operatic repertoire. She studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera in 1971 as Frasquita in Carmen. Throughout her career, Sass performed in major opera houses worldwide, including the Paris Opera, Moscow's Bolshoi, and London's Royal Opera House. Her repertoire included Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Mimì in La bohème, and Judith in Bluebeard's Castle, though she was especially acclaimed for roles in early Giuseppe Verdi operas, particularly as Lady Macbeth. She has also served as a juror for international vocal competitions, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Elena Obraztsova International Competition of Young Opera Singers. In 2017, she received the prestigious Kossuth Prize in Hungary.
