Biography

Sylvester Weaver, born July 25, 1897 in Louisville, Kentucky, was an American country blues guitarist and singer. After serving briefly in the army during World War I, he began playing guitar in bars. In October 1923, Sylvester Weaver recorded "Longing for Daddy Blues" and "I've Got to Go and Leave My Daddy Behind" with Sara Martin, marking a significant moment in blues history as the first time a blues singer was accompanied solely by an acoustic guitar. Two weeks later, he made history as the first rural blues musician to record slide guitar with "Guitar Rag" and "Guitar Blues." Released by Okeh Records, these recordings were pivotal in the development of country blues. Weaver lived in Louisville until his death on April 4, 1960.
