The origins of the California-based supergroup Supersonic Blues Machine date back to the early 2010s when bassist and producer Fabrizio Grossi and drummer Kenny Aronoff toured as the rhythm section of Steve Lukather’s jam band project Goodfellas. In 2015, Fabrizio Grossi began working on music for a commercial with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, who encouraged him to start writing original material and form his own band. After bringing Texas native Lance Lopez into the fold, Supersonic Blues Machine made its formal debut with the single “Running Whiskey” in 2016. The song was included in their first LP West of Flushing, South of Frisco, which cracked the Top 15 of Billboard’s Blues Albums chart later that year and featured cameos by Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Walter Trout, Robben Ford, and Chris Duarte. Over the next few years, the trio kept refining their bourbon-soaked blend of roots music while touring the US and Europe with a revolving door of guest musicians. Released in 2017, their sophomore effort Californisoul also entered the American blues charts and expanded their sound even further, incorporating elements from funk and soul into their repertoire. Following Lance Lopez’s exit from the group in 2018, Fabrizio Grossi and Kenny Aronoff recruited English singer-songwriter Kris Barras and quickly hit the road for a series of shows across the United States, Europe, and Asia that were captured on the 2019 live album Road Chronicles: Live! Voodoo Nation, their third full-length, appeared in 2022 and enjoyed great popularity in Europe, reaching Number 81 on the German charts.
