Biography

Popa Chubby, real name Theodore Joseph Horowitz, is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter born in the Bronx district of New York on March 31, 1960. Since the 1990s, he has established himself as one of the leading figures of muscular, electric blues rock, with a style marked by powerful riffs, a raspy voice and a rebellious attitude. Cradled by Jimi Hendrix, Motörhead and New York punk, Popa Chubby's guitar playing is explosive, expressive and incisive, blending traditional blues, rock, funk and sometimes even rap. His prolific career includes more than 30 studio and live albums, including Booty and the Beast (1996), Old School (2003), Electric Chubbyland (2006) and Universal Breakdown Blues (2013). Recognizable by his imposing stature, his cap screwed on his head and his Stratocaster slung over his shoulder, Popa Chubby is also renowned for his intense, generous stage performances, both in Europe and the United States. Returning after the Covid-19 pandemic with the album It's a Mighty Hard Road (2020), in 2025 he signs a tribute to another of his main influences, I Love Freddie King.
