Biography

Super Grupo Colombia is a Mexican cumbia sonidera group founded in 1977 in Mexico City by bandleader Aarón Pedraza Islas, later joined by his brother Alberto Pedraza Islas as part of the broader Pedraza Dynasty. From their base in San Juan de Aragón, they built a live-oriented sound that mixed Colombian-style cumbia with brass, accordion and percussion, becoming one of the key precursors of the cumbia sonidera movement in Mexico in the late 1970s and early 1980s with early classics such as “Cumbia del Cuervo” and other dance-floor staples that circulated heavily in barrio sound-system culture. Their songs and medleys, including the influential “Mosaico Cuervo”, helped define the rougher, more percussive edge of Mexico City cumbia and were widely adopted by sonidero DJs and later the Kolombia scene in Monterrey. Through the 1990s and 2000s Super Grupo Colombia consolidated their catalog with releases and compilations like Super Grupo Colombia: Grandes Éxitos and Super Grupo Colombia lo Mejor de Siempre, as well as albums such as Al Gusto de la Gente – Auténticos Embajadores de la Cumbia, which underlined their reputation as ambassadors of the style. In the 2010s they remained present via Peerless and other labels with compilations such as Peerless 80 aniversario: Super Grupo Colombia – 24 Cumbias pa’ bailar and new material including Cumbia Embajadora and Cumbia del Bombardino, then updated their sound in the late 2010s and 2020s with tracks like “Cumbia Corraleja”, “La Monjita Voladora” and a run of digital singles including “Catalina”, “Oye Bailador”, “Amores Sin Corazón (Remake)”, “Prende la Candela”, “Mujer de Sueño” and “Botana Mexicana”, while continuing to tour Mexico and the United States as a reference name in cumbia sonidera.
