Sunna Gunnlaugsdóttir, known as Sunna Gunnlaugs, was born on May 11, 1970, in Iceland and was a jazz pianist and composer. She grew up on the Seltjarnarnes peninsula, played pop and entertainment music on a home organ, and discovered modern jazz through an album by Bill Evans. In 1993, Gunnlaugs moved to the United States to study music at William Paterson College. While living in Brooklyn, she released her debut album Far Far Away with her trio featuring Dan Fabricatore and Scott McLemore. She later expanded her band to a quartet with Tony Malaby, releasing Mindful (1999) and Vagra Feröld (2002). Gunnlaugs collaborated with Ohad Talmor on the album Live in Europe, which sold well in North America. Her subsequent releases included Long Pair Bond (2011), which received very good reviews. Notable collaborations included albums Unspoken (2016) with Maarten Ornstein and Ancestry (2018) with Verneri Pohjola.
