Biography

Sudirman bin Haji Arshad (25 May 1954 – 22 February 1992) was a Malaysian singer and songwriter born in Temerloh, Pahang. After completing secondary education at Sultan Abu Bakar School, he studied law at the University of Malaya but pursued music concurrently, winning the Bintang RTM competition in 1976. His early releases, including the EP Teriring Doa (1976) and the album Aku Penghiburmu (1978), established his presence in the Malaysian pop scene. Over the next decade, he released a series of albums such as Anak Muda (1980), Kul it! (1986), and Asia’s No. 1 Performer (1989), the latter coinciding with his award at the Asian Popular Music Awards in London on 19 March 1989. Notable tracks like "Merisik Khabar" and "Milik Siapakah Gadis Ini" reached the top of local charts, and he collaborated with artists across Malay, Indian, Chinese, and English repertoires. Sudirman also acted in the 1982 film Kami and hosted television programs, expanding his influence beyond music. He died of pneumonia on 22 February 1992 at age 37, after a brief hospitalization in Kuala Lumpur. Posthumously, he received the Anugerah Industri Muzik award, and his song "Balik Kampung" was voted Malaysia’s best song in 2013, cementing his enduring legacy.
