Biography
Suburban Reptiles, a New Zealand punk band, were formed in Auckland in late 1976 by students Simon Grigg and Brett Salter. Their first live performance at the University of Auckland was cut short when a custodian pulled the power. The band's lineup stabilized with Mark Hough joining as drummer, and they began performing under stage names. In 1978, Suburban Reptiles released their debut single "Megaton / Desert Patrol" on Phonogram's Vertigo label. Later that year, the band faced internal conflicts and legal issues, notably when Clare Elliot was arrested for swearing on stage. Despite these challenges, they released their second single, "Saturday Night Stay at Home", produced by Phil Judd, in 1978. This single became an instant classic and was later named the greatest New Zealand single of all time in a Student Radio survey in the early 2000s.
