Biography

Submotion Orchestra, originally a seven-piece band formed in 2009 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, emerged from an Arts Council-funded event mixing electronic, jazz and soul music. Their debut EP in 2010 led to a BBC Radio One session with Gilles Peterson. The band released their first album, Finest Hour, in 2011 on Exceptional Records, followed by Fragments (2012), Alium (2014), and Colour Theory (2016). In 2018, they launched SMO Recordings and released Kites. Their track "All Yours" was sampled by Bryson Tiller on his 2015 track "Right My Wrongs". Submotion Orchestra has performed at major festivals including Glastonbury and Bestival. In the 2020s, the group evolved into a five-piece lineup and explored a more intimate, stripped-back sound through the releases Unplugged Vol. I (2020), Unplugged Vol. 2 (2023), and the EP Five Points (2024). In 2026, they returned with their seventh full-length, Passed Me By.
