Biography

Steuart John Rudolf Bedford OBE was an English orchestral and opera conductor and pianist. He was born in the United Kingdom into a musical family, the son of soprano Lesley Duff and inventor Leslie Bedford, and the grandson of Liza Lehmann and Herbert Bedford, and the brother of composer David Bedford and singer Peter Lehmann Bedford. He made his operatic conducting debut in 1964 at the Oxford Playhouse with Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. Bedford became particularly associated with Britten’s music, notably conducting the world premiere of Death in Venice in 1973, as well as other Britten operas. Between 1974 and 1998, he was one of the Artistic Directors of the Aldeburgh Festival, becoming joint artistic director with Oliver Knussen in 1989. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to music. Bedford died on February 15, 2021, aged 81.
