Stephen Lawrence Schwartz, born on March 6, 1948 in New York City, is an American musical theatre composer and lyricist. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University and began his career as a producer for RCA Records before transitioning to Broadway theater. His breakthrough came with the title song for Butterflies Are Free and the musical Godspell, which premiered in 1971 and won him two Grammy Awards. Schwartz followed this success with Pippin (1972) and The Magic Show (1974), both of which became long-running hits. He returned to Broadway with the musical Wicked, which premiered in 2003. Schwartz has earned numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and six Tony Award nominations.
