It took nearly a decade of touring before the alternative rock band Splender finally released their first album. In 1990, frontman Waymon Boone joined forces with bass player James Cruz. Based in New York City, they added and dropped several additional members before the core lineup of Splender solidified with Jonathan Svec as their lead guitarist and Marc Slutsky on drums. After signing with Hit and Run publishing, the band began touring more of the world, eventually playing alongside Korn on a series of festival dates. After signing with Columbia, they scored a coup by landing Todd Rundgren to produce their debut album, Halfway Down the Sky. Their sound, rock informed with pop hooks, led to chart success for their initial singles. “Yeah, Whatever”, landed in the top 40 of the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The follow up “I Think God Can Explain” did the same on the US Top 40 Mainstream chart. Their follow-up album, To Whom It May Concern came out in 2002 on J Records and featured the single “Save It for Later” which landed them their third top 40 hit, peaking at number 34 on the Adult Top 40 chart. The follow-up single, “The Lonliest Person I Know”, stiffed and the band broke up not long after.
