Special Generation was formed in 1989 in St.â¯Petersburg, Florida, by five singers-Fernando Carter, Maurice Dowdell, Maquet Robinson, Charles Salter, and Kendrick Washington-who were signed to MC Hammerâs Bust It Records, a Capitol Records subsidiary. Their debut single "Love Me Just For Me" entered the Billboard Hotâ¯100 at number 91 and reached number 8 on the Topâ¯R&B Singles chart, while the album Take It To The Floor peaked at number 17 on the Topâ¯R&B Albums chart. In 1992 the group released Butterflies and issued the single "Lift Your Head (And Smile)", which climbed to number 13 on the Hotâ¯R&B Singles chart; however, the label dropped the group later that year and the quintet disbanded in 1993. Afterward, members pursued individual projects-Robinson became a producer, Salter performed as Maxâ¯'C, and Washington established management firms. In 2020 the group reunited to release "I Can't Help Yourself", marking their brief return to the recording scene.
