Spakka Neapolis 55, a world music group from Naples, Italy, was formed in 1999 by Monica Pinto and Antonio Fraioli. Initially named Spaccanapoli, the band underwent several lineup changes before settling with Ernesto Nobili, Giacomo Pedicini, and Francesco Manna. In 2003, they won the Miroir des musiques et traditions du monde award at the Festival d'été de Québec. The group changed its name to Spakka Neapolis 55 in 2004, with "Neapolis" meaning "new city," the original name of Naples, and "55" symbolizing music in Neapolitan culture. They released their debut album Lost Souls (Aneme Perze) under Virgin Records in 2000. In 2011, Spakka Neapolis 55 contributed "Vesuvio" to John Turturro's documentary film Passione, receiving critical acclaim for the song.
