Eugene Powell, known as Sonny Boy Nelson, was born on December 23, 1908, in Utica, Mississippi. He began playing guitar at age seven and performed with his half-brother Bennie "Sugar" Wilson. In the mid-1930s, he married singer Mississippi Matilda, and together they traveled to New Orleans to record for Bluebird Records. Nelson played multiple instruments, including banjo, harmonica, and violin, often using a modified Silvertone guitar with an aluminum resonator and an extra seventh string. His career saw a decline as electric blues styles gained popularity, leading him to live quietly until his death on November 4, 1998, in Greenville, Mississippi. Nelson's work includes the album Police In Mississippi Blues, released in 1978.
