Biography

Sonic Assassins were a UK rock band formed in 1977, consisting of members from Hawkwind and local Devon band Ark. The group included Robert Calvert on vocals, Dave Brock on guitar, Harvey Bainbridge on bass, Paul Hayles on keyboards, and Martin Griffin on drums. The name Sonic Assassins was originally coined by Michael Moorcock to describe Hawkwind in a comic strip. The band played one live gig at the Barnstaple Queens Hall on December 23, 1977, with overdubs added later at Griffin's studio. Their set was released only on various EPs and compilations, including "Over the Top", "Magnu" / "Angels of Life", "Free Fall", "Death Trap", and "The Golden Void". Following their single performance, the band disbanded as members rejoined Hawkwind or other projects. Notable tracks like "Death Trap" and "Free Fall" were later recorded for PXR5 album and the Hawklords' 25 Years On album, respectively.
