Solomon Gbadegesin Ilori, born around 1934 in Nsawam, Gold Coast, now Ghana, is a Nigerian drummer and percussionist who learned to play the drums, guitar, and flute as a child. He relocated to Lagos after his motherâs death in 1945, and in 1958, he moved to the United States. In New York City, Ilori collaborated with prominent jazz figures such as Art Blakey and Harry Belafonte. Sideman performances include Blakeyâs album The African Beat (1962). In 1963, Ilori released the debut album African High Life through Blue Note Records, which contributed to the visibility of African jazz influences in the United States.
