Biography

Hubert Laws is a jazz and classical musician who is widely acknowledged to be one of the most talented flautists in the history of jazz music. Although classically trained, Laws' mastery of his instrument has enabled him to effortlessly cross genres and he is equally at home playing jazz, pop, soul, classical or rhythm and blues. During his long and distinguished career he has played with symphony orchestras, the pop duo Ashford and Simpson, jazz legend Chet Baker and a host of other bands and artists across all sectors of the music business. Laws was one of eight children brought up in Houston, Texas and amongst his siblings were three respected singers, Eloise, Debra and Johnnie and the saxophonist Ronnie Laws. After winning a scholarship to the famed Juilliard School of Music he studied with master flautist Julius Baker and during this period performed regularly with both the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Orchestra. As well as his mastery of the flute, Laws is also an exceptional saxophone player and this can be heard on some of the recordings made by the New York Jazz Quartet during the 1970s.
