Biography

A major figure in free jazz, Sam Rivers (1923-2011) got his start in Boston under the aegis of Herb Pomeroy, before forming his own quartet in 1952. Accompanying Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp and Paul Bley, he briefly joined the Miles Davis quintet in 1964. His first recordings under his own name, Fuchsia Swing Song and Contours, were confusing, but soon became legendary. Creator of the "loft" scene via his Rivbea label, Sam Rivers continued in this vein until his last breath.
