Biography

Shooting frankly from the hip about periods, sex work and the "Pleasures of Soho," electroclash-laced synthpop troupe Sohodolls released their debut album, Ribbed Music for the Numb Generation, in 2007 on Filthy Pretty Records after forming in London four years earlier. A cool, catchy, bold statement of intent that elevated the band's status to critical darlings, the album also garnered mainstream appeal: "Stripper" and "I'm Not Cool" were used in seasons one and two of the US television series Gossip Girl. Bolstered by an industrial 1980s electro-rock stomp and dripping with neon-lit sleaze, other highlights from the album included "Bang Bang Bang Bang," "Weekender" and "My Vampire," while in 2014 the band stepped out with a poppier EP, Mayday, stripping back the layers of scuzz to reveal a polished electro-pop core. After a seven-year recording break, Sohodolls – currently comprising Maya von Doll (vocals), Toni Sailor (guitar), Weston Doll (Steven Weston) (keyboards), Matt Lord (double bass) and Paul Stone (drums) – returned in 2021 with a swirling synth-powered punk bullet, "Period."
