Biography

The best-selling act in Danish history, Shu-bi-dua was co-founded in 1973 by frontmen Michael Bundesen and Michael Hardinger. Formed in Copenhagen, Denmark, the group took inspiration from a wide mix of pop, European schlager, and folk influences, creating a unique sound that also featured humorous lyrics and radio-friendly melodies. Shu-bi-dua did, indeed, become a staple on Danish radio for nearly half a century, beginning with the band's 1974 debut, Shu-bi-dua 1, and continuing with a run of releases that stretched well into the 21st century. Bundesen, Hardinger, bassist Kim Daugaard, and guitarist Claus Asmussen quickly became the longest-running members of the band's ever-shifting lineup, with Bundesen appearing on every release apart from Shu-bi-dua 11 in 1985. Although the group's prolific output had slowed considerably by the 2010s, Shu-bi-dua released a number of iconic Danish singles during its multi-decade run, with highlights including "Familien kom til Kaffe," "Sexchikane," "Danmark," "Vuffeli-Vov," and the 2010 hit "Midsommersangen." Shu-bi-dua lapsed into inactivity in 2011, although a handful of compilations and live releases helped maintain the band's spot on the Danish charts through the middle of the decade. Bundesen, the band's de facto leader, passed away in November 2020.
