Biography

Shmuel "Shmulik" Kraus was born on July 1, 1935, in Jerusalem, Israel. He began his career teaching tap dance before serving in the Israeli Navy and working as a merchant seaman. Kraus started singing at the end of the 1950s with Abraham Reichstadt. In 1966, he formed The High Windows band with Josie Katz and Arik Einstein, composing all their songs. Throughout the early 70s, Kraus collaborated on albums with Arik Einstein and composed notable tracks such as "When You Cry, You're Not Pretty" for Einstein. His song "Hatishma Koli" was chosen by Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon to be played during his orbit on the Columbia space shuttle in 2003. Kraus also appeared in films such as Rocking Horse and Hole in the Moon. He died on February 17, 2013, after being hospitalized with swine influenza.
