Shiyani Ngcobo was a South African Maskandi guitarist born in 1953 in KwaZulu-Natal. He began his musical journey at age 13, inspired by his brother's introduction to the traditional piece "Sevelina." In 1989, Ngcobo won a Maskandi guitar competition at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he later taught. His breakthrough came in 2004 with the release of Introducing Shiyani Ngcobo, recorded with producer Ben Mandelson. The album led to international tours across Europe and his sole U.S. concert at Carnegie Hall in 2007. Ngcobo's music, characterized by its minimalistic style and traditional instruments, explored themes of Zulu migrant life and cultural change. He died on February 18, 2011, near Durban. Posthumously, he was included in the compilation The Rough Guide to African Guitar Legends, released on March 15, 2011.
