Biography

Shelly Manne & His Men was a US jazz band led by drummer Shelly Manne, active from 1955 to approximately 1967. The group was formed in California and initially included members such as Bob Enevoldsen, Joe Maini, Bob Cooper, Jimmy Giuffre, Russ Freeman, and Ralph Peña. In September 1959, the band recorded The West Coast Sound for Contemporary Records. The group achieved significant recognition during their residency at San Francisco’s Black Hawk club in 1959, which resulted in the live albums At the Black Hawk Vol. 1-4. Notable members during this period included Richie Kamuca, Victor Feldman, Monty Budwig, and Joe Gordon. In the early 1960s, Shelly Manne & His Men continued to release influential albums such as At The Manne Hole, Volumes 1-2. The band's lineup evolved over time, with members like Conte Candoli, Frank Strozier, and Mike Wofford joining in later years. Their final album, Perk Up, was released in 1967.
