Donald Winston Thompson, also known as Don Thompson, was born on January 18, 1940, in Powell River, British Columbia, and is a Canadian jazz musician who plays double bass, piano, and vibes. He began his career as a freelance musician playing bass in Vancouver from 1960 to 1965. His breakthrough came working with saxophonist John Handy and performing at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival. In 1967, he returned to Canada and settled in Toronto, joining Rob McConnellâs Boss Brass as a percussionist before switching to bass in 1971 and later to piano from 1987 to 1993. Thompson's career included notable collaborations with Paul Desmond's Toronto Quartet, guitarist Jim Hall, and Diana Panton. He was a fixture on the Toronto jazz scene since the late 1960s, appearing on over 200 records with artists such as George Shearing, Buddy Tate, and Anne Murray. Thompson received multiple awards, including Juno Awards for Best Jazz Recording in 1980 and Best Traditional Jazz Album in 2006 for his album titled Ask Me Later (2005).
