Sham Rock, a Northern Irish pseudo-folk band from Belfast, was formed in the late 1990s and consisted of Anne Barrett, John Hamilton, Philip Larsen, Graham Scales, and Jacqueline Scales. The group emerged during a time when folk music was experiencing a resurgence in popularity, blending traditional elements with modern pop sensibilities. Sham Rock gained prominence with their debut single "Tell Me Ma", released in 1998. This track was a pop adaptation of the 19th-century children's song "I'll Tell Me Ma" and peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart, remaining there for 13 weeks. The single sold over 200,000 copies in the United Kingdom and Ireland, earning it a Silver certification in April 2025. "Tell Me Ma" became an anthem of sorts, capturing the spirit of Irish culture and nostalgia. Despite their initial success, Sham Rock is often categorized as a one-hit wonder, with no other chart entries to follow. Their sole album, Sham Rock: The Album, was released in 2003, featuring a collection of folk-inspired tracks that further showcased the band's unique sound. Additionally, they released "Sham Rock Medley" in November 2008, which included a mix of their popular songs and traditional Irish tunes. Sham Rock's impact extended beyond their chart success; their music became a staple at Irish cultural events and celebrations, solidifying their place in the folk music landscape.
