Shadrach Kabango, known professionally as Shad, was born on July 18, 1982, in Kenya to Rwandan parents and raised in London, Ontario. He is a Canadian rapper, songwriter, and broadcaster. While studying at Wilfrid Laurier University, Shad won $17,500 from 91.5 The Beat's Rhythm of the Future talent competition, financing his self-released debut album When This Is Over (2005). In 2007, Shad was signed by Black Box Recordings and released his second album, The Old Prince, supported by four singles, including "The Old Prince Still Lives at Home". His third album, TSOL (2010), won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year in 2011. Shad's subsequent albums include Flying Colours (2013) and A Short Story About a War (2018). He has been shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize five times, more than any other artist in its history.
