Biography

Sergej Alekseyevich Larin was a Russian operatic tenor who was born in 1956 in Daugavpils, Latvia. He underwent vocal training in Lithuania under the tenor Virgilijus Noreika and gave his debut at the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre in 1981 as Alfredo in the opera La traviata. Following nearly a decade of performances in Soviet venues, Larin signed a contract with the Slovak National Theatre and moved to Slovakia, which led to his debut at the Vienna State Opera. His international career included a 1991 debut at Covent Garden singing Don JosÃ© in Carmen. He interpreted the role of Cavaradossi in Tosca for his debuts at both the Paris OpÃ©ra and the Metropolitan Opera. His repertoire at the Metropolitan Opera also featured roles such as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Dmitri in Boris Godunov, and Don Alvaro in La forza del destino. Known for his strong tenor voice, he was frequently selected for major Russian roles, including the Fool, Shuisky, and the False Dmitri I in Boris Godunov. Larin also performed the role of Calaf in a production of Turandot that was recorded in China. His recordings include several albums of Russian songs for the label Chandos, featuring the works of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Larin died in 2008 in Bratislava.
