Benjamin Bagby, born February 20, 1950, in Evanston, Illinois, is an American singer, composer, and harpist. He was educated at Oberlin College and the Schola Cantorum in Basel. In 1977, Bagby founded the ensemble Sequentia with Barbara Thornton, focusing on medieval music repertoires. The group released numerous recordings, many on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, specializing in the works of Hildegard of Bingen during the 1980s and 1990s. Sequentia performed music from various musical centers including Santiago de Compostela, Aquitaine, and Notre-Dame de Paris. Bagby's compositions contributed to recreations of ancient epics like Beowulf and the Icelandic Edda. His version of Beowulf, first performed in the 1990s, was documented on DVD from a show in Copenhagen. Bagby has given international presentations including at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools.
