Biography
The Sensational Nightingales, a traditional black gospel quartet, were founded in 1942 by Barney Parks. The group initially featured Julius "June" Cheeks as lead singer, who joined in 1946 after Parks had formerly sung with the Dixie Hummingbirds. Throughout the 1950s and beyond, they continued to release albums such as Songs of Praise (1959), Glory Glory (1963), and Travel On (1964). Cheeks left the group in 1960 to form his own group, "the Sensational Knights," with Charles Johnson taking over as lead singer. The group underwent several membership changes, including Calvert McNair replacing Johnson in 1984. Notable albums from this period include All About Jesus (1980), Saints Hold On (1981), and Don't Give Up (1998).
